The Latin name of the plant, Rosmarinus, refers to the sea spray as it derives from the word ros (dew, sea spray), and marinus (of the sea, sea born) because it was believed that it can grow without being watered, relying solely on the mist from the sea.
The plant was known for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks used it in various religious rituals and festivities, for the decoration of temples and other buildings; and as for an incense. It was also thought to have therapeutic attributes and was applied in traditional medical practice.
