Yakinthos (Hyacinth)

Yakinthos

According to mythology, Yakinthos was a handsome young man from Sparta. He was the lover of both Apollo (the god of sun) and Zefyros (the god of wind), and so the two gods competed to win his favour.

One day, as Apollo was teaching Yakinthos the game of quoit, the discus went off course and fatally wounded the unfortunate young man. From Yakinthos’ spilled blood Apollo created a flower, the hyacinth.

The word Yakinth exists since deep antiquity, since traces of it are found in the pre-hellenic Thracian-Pelasgian dialect that was spoken 4,000 years ago.
